This Is Us (On Going)

This Is Us (?) is my visual response regarding proof or a question regarding our identity concerning Muslim women living in Aceh. Aceh is not an Arab state. However, it is very steeped in Islamic culture. Living in a democratic country, Aceh has the right to its own culture.

When I first went to the capital of Indonesia, people kept asking whether Acehnese women could wear jeans, if it was permissible in Aceh to remove the hijab, if Acehnese women could work outside the household, and what about caning?

Mass media coverage of the implementation of Islamic sharia in Aceh seems to have brought us to a backward situation. I keep rethinking our identity, questioning again the ideas that are the basis for the implementation of Islamic sharia, Rahmatan lil Alamin.
